Can I put a swimming pool in my yard in Canton Township?

Yes, as an accessory use, with location rules from Section 2.03.E:

  • At least 5 feet from any property line, and never in the front yard. On a corner lot, the pool must also stay out of the required yard along the side street.
  • At least 4 feet from any building wall or non-boundary fence.
  • At least 25 feet from any private well, and 3 feet from a sewer line (10 feet from a septic tank and field) for in-ground pools.
  • Never inside a recorded easement.

In a subdivision, the pool's filtering and heating equipment may not sit in the side yard or the street-side yard of a corner lot, and never in the front yard (Section 2.03.E.6).

The zoning ordinance leans on the building code for barriers rather than setting its own fence height for pools, so expect the state-required enclosure and gate standards at permit time. Since a pool usually arrives with a deck or patio, remember the rear-yard rule: terraces and decks may occupy the rear yard only while 25 feet of depth stays unoccupied, and an elevated deck over 4 feet becomes an attached structure with full setbacks (Section 2.09.A.3.b). Apply through Building and Inspection Services.
