Can I keep chickens in Orion Township?
It depends on your district and acreage.
In SF, SE, and SR, agriculture and farming including livestock and poultry raising is permitted by right as a principal use (Section 5.01). Animal shelters and manure storage still carry 70 foot setbacks under the stable rules when they apply (Section 5.02.C).
In R-1, R-2, and R-3, poultry, rabbits, sheep, and goats kept as a non-commercial accessory use are a special use requiring Planning Commission approval, and the conditions are steep (Section 6.02.M):
- The parcel must be at least 2.5 acres.
- Animals must be housed and fenced at least 70 feet from any abutting property line.
- Manure stored 70 feet from lines and removed weekly.
On a typical R-3 subdivision lot there is no path to backyard chickens under the current text; the lot is too small by an order of magnitude. Special use approval means a public hearing with notice to neighbors within 300 feet (Section 30.02).
If you are on acreage, the math works. Otherwise ask Planning & Zoning at 248-391-0304 ext. 5000 whether any amendment is in progress before investing in a coop.
