Can I build a fence?
Yes, subject to UDO Sec. 8.5.4 (Fences, Walls and Berms) and a development permit. For single-family residential lots, the front yard fence height is capped at 4 feet, and side/rear yard fences at 6 feet. Multifamily, commercial, and mixed-use lots allow 8 feet in the front yard and 4 feet in side/rear yards, or up to 10 feet with Administrator approval. Industrial lots allow 6 feet in any yard. Regardless of these limits, any fence or wall inside a sight visibility triangle at a street or driveway intersection may not exceed 36 inches. Vinyl fences are not permitted; approved materials are masonry, stone, architectural block, stucco on masonry, and stained or painted wood or composite material of similar solid appearance. Solid, opaque fences are not allowed in front yards, and the finished side must face the lower-intensity adjoining use. Fences cannot be placed in public easements. Start by confirming your zoning district on the current Official Zoning Map or with the Planning Department at 919-435-9510.
