Can I build a fence?
Yes, with a permit. The city's Development Services FAQ states a permit is required for every fence built or repaired ($25 fee); rear and side yard fences may be up to 6 feet tall from grade using schedule-40 steel posts; front yard fences are capped at 48 inches; and barbed wire fences are prohibited citywide. Chapter 82 Zoning separately requires a six-foot fence of approved material in the required side and rear yard for planned-development residential lots, built with steel posts, with no fence in the required front yard or beyond the front building line unless separately approved. Where your lot borders a different zoning district, you may be the party responsible for building the separating fence or wall (for example, a nonresidential lot next to a residential district, or a multifamily lot next to single-family). This pack has not independently fetched the full codified City of Princeton Fence Ordinance text; confirm your zoning district and any additional material or permit specifics with Development Services, Planning and Zoning (972-736-2416) before building. This pack covers incorporated Princeton only; ETJ and unincorporated Collin County land have no municipal zoning.
