Can I build a fence in McKinney?

Yes, subject to Article 7 of the Unified Development Code. Front yard fences are capped at 4 feet and must be at least 50 percent open with wire fencing prohibited. Side and rear yard fences behind the front building line may go up to 8 feet 6 inches (up to 10 feet in industrial districts and on public property), dropping to 6 feet 8 inches within the H Historic Overlay unless a special exception is granted. Electrically charged fences are allowed only in the AG district. Barbed wire and fence arms are limited to industrial districts and public property securing infrastructure, and cannot cross the property line. No fence may sit in the sight-visibility triangle at a street/street intersection (20 feet back) or street/alley intersection (15 feet back), and none may block drainage flow within a drainage easement. Start by confirming the zoning district through the city's zoning GIS layer or the Planning Department at 972-547-2000. This pack covers incorporated McKinney only; the ETJ and unincorporated Collin County have no municipal zoning.
