Can I build a fence?

Yes, with a permit in most cases. Under Sec. 2.09.02.E a fence permit from the Development Services Director is required for any new perimeter fence or relocation of an existing fence; like-for-like replacement is excluded. Height is capped at six feet behind the front yard line, and fences are not allowed in front of a single family or duplex home except decorative fences at least 50 percent open and no taller than 42 inches. Perimeter fences must be masonry, wrought iron, cedar, precast concrete resembling wood, stucco, stone, brick (not CMU), or vinyl with a similar appearance. Chain link is allowed only for side and rear fences not facing a street, and barbed wire or electric fencing is prohibited in residential areas except for agricultural use on lots over one acre. Corner lots cannot fence a required side yard next to a street, gates for vehicles must sit 50 feet back from the property line, and the Sec. 4.01 sight visibility triangle applies. Pool fences follow the building code.
