Can I build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) or in-law suite in Orion Township?
The zoning ordinance has no ADU provision. No section authorizes a second dwelling unit, attached or detached, on a single-family lot, and several rules point the other way:
- Basement residency is prohibited township-wide (Section 27.02.H).
- Motor homes, trailers, and temporary buildings may not be used as dwellings, outside a narrow disaster-repair permit (Section 27.02.C).
- A mobile home cannot be placed on a lot that already has a dwelling (Section 6.02.A.1.a).
- The one detached-garage exception in the ordinance expressly bans overnight habitation (Section 27.02.A.1.e).
An in-law arrangement inside your existing house, with no separate dwelling unit created, is a different question that turns on the Article II dwelling definitions and township interpretation.
This is a finding about what the ordinance does not contain, so treat it as a starting point. State law also protects certain licensed residential facilities regardless of local zoning. Before planning around any of this, talk to Planning & Zoning at 248-391-0304 ext. 5000.
