Are accessory dwelling units (ADUs) allowed in Macomb Township?

No provision for them exists. The Macomb Township Zoning Ordinance, current through Supp. No. 35 (Ordinance 10-79, October 2025), contains no accessory dwelling unit, guest house, or accessory apartment section. The residential district articles each allow one principal dwelling per lot (Sec. 10.0402.B; Sec. 10.0602.A; Sec. 10.0702.A), Sec. 10.0330 bars putting a residential structure on a lot that already has a dwelling (with a farm tenant house exception in AG), and accessory buildings may not be used for occupancy or business (Sec. 10.0331.10).

The only temporary second-living arrangement in the ordinance is a mobile home occupied during construction of your house, limited to 6 months and subject to health approvals (Sec. 10.0317). An attached in-law suite inside the house, with no second kitchen creating a separate dwelling unit, is a different question that turns on the definition of dwelling unit; ask the Planning Department at 586-992-0710 before designing one.
