Accessory dwelling units in Macomb Township, MI

What the Macomb Township zoning ordinance says about accessory dwelling units, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

The Macomb Township Zoning Ordinance contains no accessory dwelling unit provision. No section of Article II definitions, Article III general provisions, or the residential district articles authorizes a second dwelling unit, guest house, or accessory apartment on a single-family lot. The AG, R-1-E, and R-1 use sections each limit lots to one principal dwelling (Sec. 10.0402.B; Sec. 10.0602.A; Sec. 10.0702.A), and Sec. 10.0330 bars residential structures on the rear of a lot or on a lot with another dwelling, with a narrow farm tenant house exception in AG. Accessory buildings may not be used for any business or occupancy beyond incidental uses (Sec. 10.0331.10), and a mobile home may serve as temporary living quarters only during construction of a house, for up to 6 months (Sec. 10.0317).

This is a verified absence as of the July 2026 review of Supp. No. 35, not a statement that the township will never allow one; a homeowner wanting an in-law arrangement should ask the Planning Department at 586-992-0710 what, if anything, is possible on their lot.
