All districts

A permit is required before erecting any fence or wall (Sec. 7.2.6.2(A)). Maximum height is 6 feet, or 8 feet with a joint application signed by both adjacent owners and Responsible Official approval. A fence in the first layer along a primary frontage must be 48 inches or less and 50 percent open; the same limit applies within 20 feet of the curb on a secondary frontage, and fences next to a public park or greenway are capped at 6 feet and 50 percent open. Chain link is limited to rear yards unless it is an established neighborhood standard. Above ground electrical fencing and barbed wire are prohibited except on lots of one acre or more in FD, AR, SF-R, CD-1, and CD-2, and barbed or razor security fencing is otherwise allowed only in HI or with specific approval. Vehicular gates must be set back 25 feet from the property line. Confirm the current code text, any overlay or historic district, and any planned development or regulating plan conditions with the San Marcos Planning Division before relying on this cell.
