All districts

UDC Section 8.07.040 sets residential fence standards for single-family, two-family, and townhome uses. Front-yard fences (and fences abutting a street in a side or rear setback) are limited to 4 ft in height and must be at least 50 percent transparent, outside a Historic Overlay District (fences abutting a street in the rear setback must also sit back at least 10 ft). In all other locations fences are limited to 6 ft, increasable to 8 ft in specific circumstances listed in Section 8.07.040.C (for example, abutting a non-residential use, in a rear yard away from a right-of-way with both owners' consent, more than 50 percent transparent overall, or on a lot next to a right-of-way wider than 120 ft); fences directly abutting public alleys stay capped at 6 ft. Barbed wire is not allowed on lots under 2 acres. A permit is required under Section 8.07.020. Confirm the district, Historic Overlay status, and any Certificate of Appropriateness requirement under Section 8.07.080 with the Planning Department before acting.
