Fences in Smyrna, TN

What the Smyrna zoning ordinance says about fences, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

Fences are allowed on any lot in any district, but may not encroach on the front yard setback that the principal structure faces, and never on public right-of-way. Fences may run along side and rear property lines. A decorative fence up to 3 ft tall (wood, wrought iron, vinyl, or brick) may encroach on a front setback, limited to 10 horizontal feet per parcel in portions of 5 ft or less. Fences in utility or drainage easements need written approval, fences on undeveloped parcels are not allowed, and barbed, razor, concertina, and similar security wire is prohibited in residential districts. Overlays, planned-development approvals, recorded conditions, and Article VI exceptions can change the parcel-specific result; confirm with Smyrna Planning and Zoning before relying on this answer.
