What the Columbia zoning ordinance says about home occupations, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

Every home occupation requires a permit under Section 8.5.10. There are two classes: a Minor Home Occupation is approved by the Zoning Administrator, and a Major Home Occupation requires Board of Zoning Appeals approval through the conditional use process. All home occupations must remain incidental to the residential use, with no outside storage or display, no exterior alterations that change the residential character, signs only as allowed by Article 7, no large-volume commercial deliveries, and any required state licensure. Minor home occupations must be conducted entirely within the principal structure.
