What are the shed rules in Sterling Heights?

A shed belongs in the rear yard, at least 3 feet from any lot line and 10 feet from your house or deck (Section 28.00.B). On a typical lot of a quarter acre or less, a shed is capped at 10 feet of height, its doors at 6 feet wide, and if you have an attached garage you get one shed up to 200 square feet; all detached accessory buildings together may not exceed 700 square feet (Section 28.00.C, E).

Bigger lots get more: up to 1,000 square feet of detached accessory buildings on a quarter to half acre, and 200 more square feet per additional quarter acre up to 2,000 square feet beyond a half acre. Any accessory building over 900 square feet needs 20 foot rear and side setbacks (Section 28.00.F-G).

A shed over 50 square feet must sit on a concrete slab at least 3.5 inches thick (Section 28.00.C). Corner lots have a special allowance letting a shed up to 200 square feet extend into the street-side front yard in defined cases (Section 28.00.B). Confirm permit requirements with the Building Department before installing.
