Where can I park my RV, boat, or trailer at home in Sterling Heights?
Chapter 37 of the City Code controls this. Store the unit in your garage, rear yard, or side yard (or the secondary front yard of a corner lot), at least 3 feet from any window or door and at least 8 feet back from the public sidewalk, or 7 feet from the front lot line where there is no sidewalk (37-24.A). An enclosed utility trailer must sit 15 feet back from the sidewalk (37-24.A).
Driveway storage is a fallback only: allowed when garage, rear, and side yard storage is impossible or inaccessible, limited to one unit, with the same setbacks (37-24.B). No more than two units total may be stored outside on any lot, they must belong to the occupants, and units must sit on asphalt, concrete, pavers, or an approved surface (37-24.C, G, J).
You may never live in a stored unit, though overnight sleeping only is permitted, and hookups are banned except temporary battery charging (37-24.E-F). A unit may sit on the street or driveway up to 48 hours for loading and trip preparation (37-24.H). Variances go through the process in 37-16.
