How tall can my fence be in Shelby Township?

Between 3 and 6 feet, and only in the right places. Shelby Township's Fence Ordinance (Code of Ordinances Chapter 10, Article VIII) allows fences from 3 to 6 feet above grade in side and rear yards and along the front building line; fences may not extend into the front yard at all (Sec. 10-324.a). Every fence needs a permit from the Building Department before construction (Sec. 10-318).

On a corner lot the street-side yard is also off limits, unless your rear yard backs up to the neighboring corner lot's rear yard, in which case the fence can stand in the street-side yard at least 10 feet from the lot line (Sec. 10-324.b). On lakefront lots, privacy fences must stay within the building envelope formed by your side and rear setbacks (Sec. 10-324.d; Zoning Ordinance Section 5.5).

Barbed wire, electric fences, and sharp toppers are prohibited (Sec. 10-326; Sec. 10-327), posts and rails must face your own lot unless your neighbor signs off (Sec. 10-322.d), and nothing that blocks visibility may stand within 25 feet of a corner (Section 5.3). The township can require a survey if lot line placement is in doubt (Sec. 10-320), so verify your lines before setting posts.
