How tall can my fence be in Royal Oak?
6 feet in most of your yard, and 4 feet in a front yard (City Code § 323-3B). Those two numbers govern most Royal Oak fences.
Three situations change them:
- Corner lots. No sight-obscuring fence over 3 feet within the visibility triangle at the corner (City Code § 323-3C).
- Driveways. The same 3-foot limit applies within 10 feet of where a driveway meets a sidewalk, alley, or right-of-way (City Code § 323-3D).
- Privacy screens. Up to 8 feet is possible in the rear yard, on the interior of the lot, at least 6 feet from the property lines (City Code § 323-3E).
Fences need a permit from the Building Department (City Code § 323-6). If your plan needs relief from a limit, the Zoning Board of Appeals can grant waivers on a showing of practical difficulties (City Code § 323-5D).
