Do I need a permit to build a fence in Canton Township?

Yes. It is unlawful to install any fence or wall without first obtaining a fence permit from the Building and Inspection Services Division (Section 2.20.C.1). The application needs a survey showing the fence location against all lot lines, drives, buildings, and neighboring properties, plus the design and height (Section 2.20.C.2).

Two wrinkles worth knowing before you order materials:

  • A fence, including its posts and footings, must sit entirely on your own property unless you obtain the written consent of the adjacent owner to build on the shared line (Section 2.20.D.7).
  • The permit does not override subdivision deed restrictions or homeowners' association rules; the township expressly disclaims responsibility for issuing a permit your HOA would prohibit (Section 2.20.C.4).

Exemptions are narrow: temporary special event fencing and winter snow fence (Section 2.20.A), and decorative borders under 36 inches (Section 2.20.E.6). Walls need 42 inch foundations, and all fences must present the finished side outward (Section 2.20.D.1, 10). Call Building and Inspection Services through 734-394-5170 with layout questions.
