What is the clear-vision triangle rule in Ferndale?
Nothing between 30 inches and 8 feet tall may sit in the sight triangles at intersections (Section 3.06). The rule keeps drivers' sight lines open, and it applies to fences, hedges, signs, and anything else in the zone.
The triangles are measured two ways:
- Street meets street. 15 feet along each lot line from the intersection.
- Driveway meets street. 7.5 feet along each side.
Within those triangles, the 30 inch to 8 foot band must stay clear. Low plantings under 30 inches are fine, and tree canopies above 8 feet are fine.
This rule interacts with fencing. A 36 inch decorative fence, otherwise allowed in any yard without a permit (Section 3.08.D), still cannot stand inside a clear-vision triangle because it exceeds 30 inches.
An alternative based on AASHTO sight-distance standards may be possible through the CED Director (Section 3.06). Ask at 248-336-4370 if your corner lot is tight.
