Can I put up a sign for my business?

In most cases, yes, but a sign permit is generally required under LDO Art. L, and signs requiring a permit must be constructed of materials with a finished appearance and professionally applied lettering. A short list of displays are not regulated as signs at all, including street address numbers, non-advertising building directories, safety warning signs, utility identification signs, and government or historical markers. A yard sign on private property does not need a permit and is limited to 12 square feet per lot and 42 inches in height. Exact permitted sign area and height for permanent commercial or freestanding signs in your specific zoning district are review-gated in this pack pending a full read of Article L's district-specific tables; confirm those figures with the Inspections Department at 919-552-1433 before ordering a sign.
