Can I park an RV or boat at my house in Canton Township?
Yes, with placement rules that are enforced (Section 4.01.E):
- Beside the house: between the front and rear building lines with at least 10 feet between the vehicle and the side lot line.
- Behind the house: anywhere behind the rear building line, at least 3 feet from side and rear lines.
- In the driveway: at most 3 days within any rolling 7 day period. Building and Inspection Services can issue up to two 2-week waivers per year for repairs or visiting guests.
Conditions: the RV or boat must be registered to the occupant, operable, and in good repair (a license expired more than 8 months disqualifies it), it may never be lived in or connected to utilities, and stored equipment may cover at most 25 percent of the required rear yard (Section 4.01.E.1, 4, 5). Parking or storing an unoccupied mobile home outside the RMH district is prohibited outright (Section 4.01.E.6).
General driveway rules also apply: no parking on lawns, and paved or gravel parking may not exceed half the front yard (Section 4.01.B.2). If you would rather build a garage for the RV, the accessory structure formula in Section 2.03.D.1 and the 9 foot door cap in Section 2.03.D.6 are the constraints to read first.
