Can I build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) or in-law suite in Shelby Township?

We found no ADU provision anywhere in the Shelby Township Zoning Ordinance (effective March 8, 2018, amended through February 1, 2024). The ordinance points the other way: only one principal building is allowed per lot in the one- and two-family districts (Section 3.29.A; Section 5.12), a dwelling unit is defined as the home of one family (Section 2.2), and accessory buildings may not contain a separate use or business (Section 5.2.A.7).

That leaves two realistic paths. First, an attached in-law area that shares the home's kitchen and entrances generally remains a single dwelling unit; the line is drawn at creating a second independent unit, so review your plan with the Building Department. Second, a true second unit needs land zoned R-2 or a multiple-family district. The temporary dwelling provision (Section 7.22) is not an in-law path: it only lets the building director approve temporary occupancy of a mobile home or trailer after a house fire, tornado, or similar act of God, for a maximum of six months with one extension.

Because this is a verified absence rather than an explicit ban, confirm with the Planning and Zoning Department (586-726-7243) before assuming either answer.
