Can I build a fence?

Yes, subject to Sec. 158.216. Residential fences are capped at 8 feet (measured from finished grade), except recreational/sporting enclosures, which the Zoning Administrator evaluates case by case. On single-family-zoned property, a fence must be set back at least 25 feet from the front property line, or even with the front corners of the house, whichever is farther; where the rear yard abuts a public right-of-way, the same 25-foot setback applies (waivable by the Zoning Administrator for special circumstances). Corner lots get specific sight-triangle rules. Permitted materials include chain link, aluminum, vinyl-coated steel, listed wood species, and code-compliant masonry; masonry is generally prohibited between the front building line and the front property line except as a limited 4-foot landscape treatment with a 2-foot break every 20 feet. Chicken wire and barbed wire are prohibited in residential districts, and pool enclosures must separately meet Florida Building Code requirements.
