Can I build a fence in Maricopa?
Yes, subject to MCC 18.80.090. In front or street side yards, fences and freestanding walls are capped at 3.5 feet (taller, visually transparent fences may be allowed by hearing officer modification). In interior side or rear yards, the cap is 6 feet in residential districts and 8 feet in commercial, mixed use, and industrial districts; rural districts allow up to 8 feet on interior lot lines for screening and livestock. Barbed wire, razor wire, and similar hazardous fencing is prohibited in residential and open space districts and along commercial/mixed-use street frontages and industrial perimeters. Chain link is allowed only where not visible from off site (with limited exceptions outside residential districts) and is barred from street-facing yards in commercial and mixed-use districts. Fences must respect the visibility triangle at intersections and driveways (MCC 18.80.150), capped at 3 feet within that triangle absent a waiver. A hearing officer fence-height waiver can allow up to 6 feet in front/street side yards and 10 feet in interior side/rear yards. Confirm your district and any PAD-specific fence standards with Development Services (520-568-9098) before building.
