Can I build a fence?
Yes, subject to Article IX (Fences) of Chapter 18 (Buildings and Building Regulations), Part II of the Code of Ordinances, a separate chapter from the Chapter 63 Zoning Ordinance that applies uniformly in every zoning district. This session fetched Article IX directly: residential rear and side yard fences may not exceed 8 feet in height (decorative gate embellishments may add up to 2 feet); residential front yard fences may not exceed 48 inches (4 feet), or more with building official approval for a decorative gate; nonresidential fences may not exceed 8 feet. Prohibited materials include woven wire fabric, chain, live bamboo, netting, cut or broken glass, paper, unapproved corrugated metal panels, galvanized sheet metal, plywood, and fiberglass panels; approved materials include wrought iron and other decorative metals, fired masonry, concrete, stone, metal tubing, wood planks, chainlink, and vinyl composite. Fences must be kept structurally sound (no more than 1 inch of lean per foot of height) or fully removed, posts included, and owners must keep fences in good repair at all times. Confirm the current Article IX text (Sec. 18-483 through 18-489) and any homeowners' association restrictions before building. This pack covers incorporated Frisco only.
