Can I build a fence?
Yes, subject to Sec. 8.2.7. Fences and walls must be built of wood, stone, brick, decorative concrete block, wrought iron, or a combination (plywood, particleboard, sheet metal, and concrete slabs are prohibited), and the side facing a right-of-way or neighboring property must be finished. No freestanding fence or wall may exceed 7 feet including posts and finials, and front-yard fences are capped at 48 inches. Chain link is allowed in residential side/rear yards only (not for subdivision-wide buffering) and must be vinyl-coated in non-residential districts except industrial and utility uses. Barbed wire is limited to agricultural or livestock uses. Fences abutting a public right-of-way or located in a required landscape buffer have additional setback and planting rules. Confirm any additional requirements for the parcel with Planning and Community Development at 919-249-3426.
