Can I rent my house on Airbnb in Canton Township?

The zoning ordinance is silent on short-term rentals. Searches of the township code for short-term rental, vacation rental, and similar terms return no dedicated ordinance, no cap, and no zoning-side prohibition as of the Supplement 65 codification (updated through April 2026). That silence cuts both ways: nothing expressly authorizes the use either, and the township could regulate it in the future.

What definitely applies today is the residential rental registration program (Township Code sections 78-277 through 78-292, adopted 2014): no owner may let any dwelling for occupancy without registering it with the Building Division and holding a current residential rental certificate of compliance, which requires an inspection (Sections 78-282, 78-284). The registry does not distinguish short from long stays, so a recurring Airbnb operation reads as a rental dwelling under this article.

Also relevant: a bed and breakfast inn, where the owner hosts overnight guests, is a special land use in the RA, RE, RR, R-1 through R-5, and MR districts requiring Township Board approval (Section 9.02.B.13; Section 10.02.B.14; Section 11.02.B.14).

This is a reading of what the code does and does not contain; enforcement practice can differ, and subdivision deed restrictions often prohibit short stays privately. Confirm with Planning Services and the Building Division at 734-394-5170 before listing.
