Does an ADU need a parking space in Ferndale?
No. Ferndale requires no parking for an accessory dwelling. The city's parking minimums live in the Off-Street Parking Manual (Section 7.07.A), and the manual's row for accessory dwellings sets no required spaces. This is a verified feature of the current code, not an omission we are guessing at.
For comparison, the manual requires 1 space per dwelling unit for ordinary residences, from single-unit homes through multiple-unit buildings. The accessory dwelling is the exception.
Practical notes:
- The principal house keeps its own 1 space requirement.
- If you add a driveway or parking area for the ADU anyway, the driveway standards in Section 7.03.C still apply, including surface materials and the limits on front yard parking.
If a plan reviewer tells you otherwise, ask them to point to the Parking Manual row. Community and Economic Development can confirm at 248-336-4370.
