Signs in Wake Forest, NC

What the Wake Forest zoning ordinance says about signs, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

A sign permit is required before erecting, constructing, enlarging, moving, or replacing most signs (Sec. 11.2.1), except for the categories exempted in Secs. 11.8 and 11.9. Address and tenant identification signs are capped at 1 square foot per tenant, owner, location, or business and do not need a permit. Sign area and height are computed under Sec. 11.3. The Sec. 11.8 permanent signage table sets, among other sign types: incidental signs at 4 square feet, 4 feet tall, all districts; occupant/street number signs at 2 square feet, 2 feet tall, all districts; historic identification plaques at 4 square feet per plaque, 2 feet tall, on historic sites only; post-and-arm signs for businesses and home occupations (all districts except UMX and RA-HC) at 4 square feet, 4.5 feet tall; and single-use monument signs that scale by district group, from 12 square feet, 6 feet tall in the OS/RD/GR3/GR5/GR10/UR group up to 70 square feet, 12 feet tall in the busier commercial and mixed-use district groups. Temporary signage in Sec. 11.9 includes construction project signs (up to 32 square feet, 8 feet tall), political signs (4 square feet, 4 feet tall), and portable/A-frame signs (12 square feet per side, 4.5 feet tall). Additional standards for both permanent and temporary signs are in Secs. 11.10 and 11.11, and prohibited sign types are listed in Sec. 11.12. The exact area and height for every sign type in every individual district (particularly the multiple-building and residential monument sign options) were not cleanly resolved across repeated fetches this session; confirm the specific figure for your district and sign type with the Planning Department at 919-435-9510 before ordering a sign.
