Accessory dwelling units in Wake Forest, NC

What the Wake Forest zoning ordinance says about accessory dwelling units, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

Only one accessory dwelling is permitted per lot. A detached accessory dwelling must be sited to the side or rear of the principal building, and must be clearly subordinate in size to the main structure. Sec. 3.2.3 itself does not set a specific numeric square footage or height cap for the accessory dwelling beyond that "clearly subordinate" standard; the practical figures below come from the Town's separate homeowner permit guidance, not from Sec. 3.2.3's own text. Per that homeowner permit guidance, the accessory dwelling must include a complete kitchen and full bathroom, requires one off-street parking space, and may not carry any sign visible from the street or public sidewalk. Accessory dwellings are permitted (for detached-dwelling lots) in RD, GR3, GR5, GR10, ICD, UR, RMX, RA HC, NMX, UMX, and PUD.
