What the Apex zoning ordinance says about home occupations, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

A home occupation must be clearly incidental to the residential use, confined to no more than 25 percent of the dwelling's floor area or 500 square feet, whichever is less. It must be conducted by an immediate family member residing in the unit (one additional non-resident employee is allowed), confined to the dwelling or an enclosed accessory structure (not an open porch), and may not change the essential residential character of the property. No goods bought for resale may be sold on the premises (homemade items and crafts may be sold on-site only in the RA and RR districts). Only one work vehicle may be stored on the premises and it may not be a commercial truck (dump truck, fuel truck, delivery truck, wrecker). Signs are limited to what Sec. 8.7.1.A.2 Home Occupation Signs allows, and the business address may not be advertised through any medium. No equipment, noise, odor, or other nuisance may extend outside the residential building, and no hazardous materials may be stored on site.
