Home occupations in Sterling Heights, MI

What the Sterling Heights zoning ordinance says about home occupations, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

All districts

Home occupations are an accessory use in the one family districts (Section 3.03.D), the R-2 district (Section 4.03.D), and mobile home parks (Section 5.01.C). Six limits apply: only permanent residents of the dwelling may work in it; the use must stay wholly inside the dwelling, not in a garage or outbuilding; no alterations, equipment, or machinery uncommon in homes; no more than 20 percent of the floor area of the house; no sign of any nature; and no traffic or parking beyond what a home normally generates (Section 3.03.D.1-6).

The multiple family articles (Articles 6 and 7) do not list home occupations as an accessory use, so apartment-based businesses are not clearly authorized; ask the Office of Planning before operating one from a multiple family unit.
