Signs in Shelby Township, MI

What the Shelby Township zoning ordinance says about signs, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

C-6 — Shelby Center (C-6)

C-6 has its own sign code: no pole signs, no flashing or moving signs, no pennants or backlit canopies, no temporary window signs. Wall signs are capped at 10 percent of the front wall face or 100 square feet, whichever is less, and 14 feet of height; a single-building tenant may use a 50 square foot monument sign (5 feet tall, 10 feet back from the right-of-way) instead. Permanent window signs are limited to 4 square feet plus 1 square foot per 10 lineal feet of window over 40 feet (Table 3.18.L.9.vi). All signs need a master sign plan approved by the planning director (Section 3.18.L.9).

All districts

Business signs: one wall sign and one ground sign per single-tenant site; pylon signs are prohibited, and the principal road-facing sign must be a ground sign (Section 5.24.B.2). Wall signs are capped at 50 square feet for individual C-1 through C-4 sites and 32 square feet for shopping center tenants (Section 5.24.B.2.n, o). Ground sign area scales with speed limit and lanes: in O-1, O-2, and C-1, 20 to 76 square feet; in C-2, C-3, C-4, L-M, and H-M, 25 to 110 square feet, all capped at 12 feet tall (Table 5.24.B.2.e). Industrial wall signs run 50 square feet for the first 20 feet of frontage plus 25 per additional 20 feet, to a 200 square foot maximum (Section 5.24.B.2.q).

Signs observe centerline setbacks (40 feet on residential local roads up to 112 feet on a 204 foot major arterial) and a 25 foot clear-vision triangle (Section 5.24.D.3). Residential districts allow subdivision entrance signs up to 24 square feet and 7 feet tall, accessory signs totaling 6 square feet, and one for-sale sign up to 6 square feet per lot (Section 5.24.B.1). Prohibited everywhere: flashing or moving signs, inflatables, banners and streamers (outside approved temporary signs), roof-projecting signs, off-site advertising except freeway-adjacent billboards in H-M under strict spacing (Section 5.24.C; Section 5.24.B.2.q(5)). Electronic changeable-message signs are allowed in C-1 through C-5, L-M, and H-M with a 50 percent area cap, 8 second minimum hold, and no scrolling or flashing (Section 5.24.B.2.r).
