All districts
Home occupations are permitted by right in the residential districts (§ 770-25). The conditions are strict:
- Only residents of the dwelling may be engaged or employed in the business. No outside employees at all.
- The business may use at most 10 percent of the dwelling's floor area.
- It must be conducted wholly within the dwelling. Never in an accessory building, attached or detached.
- No exterior signage, and no direct sales of products on the premises.
- No traffic beyond normal domestic levels, no visible storage, no nuisance, and no added parking.
The zero non-resident employee rule is stricter than what several neighboring cities allow, so do not assume a setup that worked elsewhere works in Royal Oak.
