All districts
Residential districts: maximum fence/wall height 6 feet (up to 8 feet along a side abutting commercial or professional use, Sec. 5.2.7.C.1.a). No fence or wall is permitted in the front setback except where the property abuts a commercial or professional use, and no fence may enclose the front facade of the principal structure (Sec. 5.2.7.C.3). Side and rear setbacks are generally none, except 10 feet from an alley in the rear (Sec. 5.2.7.C.2). A waterfront-view protection rule limits fences/hedges to 3 feet (or 4 feet for hedges) within 10 feet of the rear property line and 7.5 feet of the side property lines near a seawall, unless open-mesh construction is used (Sec. 5.2.7.C.4). Non-residential and mixed-use districts: 6-foot maximum (8 feet if abutting a residential use). Industrial, Agricultural, Institutional, and Preservation districts: 8-foot maximum. South Cape and MXB: 42 inches in front yards, 6 feet elsewhere (8 feet abutting a residential use) (Sec. 5.2.7.D through I). Permitted materials are listed in Sec. 5.2.7.B.13; barbed wire, spikes, and electric fencing are prohibited except for bona fide agricultural livestock control or, in limited height, around critical utility infrastructure. A permit is required for every fence or wall (Sec. 5.2.7.B.10); an administrative deviation from height, setback, or material standards may be requested (Sec. 5.2.7.A.4).
