Cape Coral's Land Development Code does not have a general accessory dwelling unit (ADU) program available citywide. The closest analog is the detached guest house, which is permitted only in the Residential Estate (RE) zoning district, only on a lot with a principal residential dwelling, capped at 1 story and 14 feet in height, no more than 30 percent of the primary structure's area or 800 square feet (whichever is less), limited to 2 bedrooms, and barred from having a kitchen or any electrical/gas connection for a stove or oven; it is not a dwelling unit and may not be rented, and it requires one additional parking space (Sec. 5.2.11.A, B). Garage conversions to living space require another garage to be built first and must meet all applicable building code requirements (Sec. 5.2.4.C.6). Outside RE, review-gated: confirm with City Planning whether any other accessory living arrangement is permitted for the specific parcel.
