All districts

Front yard setback fences are capped at 36 inches, or 48 inches if the portion above 36 inches is an open material such as wrought iron; parcels zoned R1-43 or larger may build up to 6 feet in the front yard if the solid portion stays at 36 inches or less and is set back at least 8 feet from the front property line (Sec. 5.2.A.4). Side and rear yard fences are capped at 6 feet from the highest adjacent grade, up to 8 feet on a sloped low side with berming or offsets, with a 2 foot view-fence portion required above 6 feet on the low side (Sec. 5.2.A.5). Fences over 6 feet require an Arizona registered structural engineer's design (Sec. 5.2.A.6). Barbed wire, wire mesh, and chain link are prohibited in every zoning district (Sec. 5.2.A.13); non-chain-link metal wire fencing is allowed in specific rural and suburban districts under Sec. 5.2.B-C. Non-residential perimeter fences follow the same 6 foot (8 foot low-side) height rule and must be finished to match the commercial or industrial building's architectural style (Sec. 5.2.D).
