All districts

Accessory buildings cannot be built until the principal building has substantially begun construction, or the primary use is established (Sec. 6.1.A.1). Accessory buildings are limited to 15 feet in height in any required yard and cannot exceed the district's height limit anywhere on the buildable lot area (Sec. 6.1.A.2). Detached accessory buildings are prohibited in the required front yard, and in a required rear yard may not occupy more than 30 percent of that yard area or come closer than 5 feet to the rear lot line (Sec. 6.1.A.3). Side yard setbacks match the underlying district (Sec. 6.1.A.4). In rural districts (A-1, AT, R1-190, R1-108, R1-54, R1-43), detached accessory buildings need not match the primary residence's design; in suburban and urban districts (R1-35, R1-18, R1-15, R1-12, R1-9, R1-7, R1-5, R1-4), detached accessory buildings other than ADUs must match the primary residence's architectural design, materials, roof type, and color (Sec. 6.1.B-C).
