Garages, sheds, and accessory structures in Goodyear, AZ

What the Goodyear zoning ordinance says about garages, sheds, and accessory structures, district by district. Section numbers link to the official ordinance.

AG — Agricultural

No maximum number of animals in the AG district; corrals, stables, and similar structures must sit in the rear yard, at least 100 feet from any dwelling and 50 feet from any lot line (Sec. 3-2-4-C). Detached accessory buildings and casitas follow the citywide standards in Sec. 8-2.

All districts

In residential districts, a front accessory building (front half of the lot) is limited to a garage or casita and must match the main building's architecture, setback, and height, capped at the main building's height (Sec. 8-2-A-1-a). A rear accessory building (rear half of the lot) may encroach into the side and rear yard, subject to one foot of added setback for each foot of height above the perimeter fence or wall (capped at 6 feet), and may not exceed 12 feet in height unless it observes the main building's setbacks, in which case it still cannot exceed the main building's height (Sec. 8-2-A-1-b, A-2). No casita is allowed on a lot that already has an Accessory Dwelling Unit (Sec. 8-2-A-1-a-4).

All districts

A pool 18 inches deep or more must be enclosed by a wall, fence, or building 5 to 6 feet high, with self-closing, self-latching gates at least 4.5 feet above grade (Sec. 5-3-1, Sec. 5-3-2). In AG, AP, AU, R1-10, R1-7, R1-6, and R2 districts, a private pool must sit in the side or rear yard, at least 5 feet from any property line; a pool proposed elsewhere on the lot needs a Use Permit (Sec. 5-3-3). No public pool may sit within 25 feet of any property line.
